According to a new report from UploadVR, Oculus is planning a third-generation Quest headset. If the report is accurate, Quest 3 will be thinner and lighter than Quest 2, with twice the power, resolution on par with the Valve Index, and an improved controller with finger tracking.While specs and features are still limited, Quest 3 could launch in 2022 at a slightly higher price than Quest 2. If the rumored upgrades hold true, Quest 3 may appeal to more VR enthusiasts and developers looking for a compelling standalone VR experience.As with any unofficial report, we'll have to wait for confirmation from Oculus on a potential Quest 3. Meta Affirms Quest 3 Release in 2023 Despite LayoffsAccording to a report from Road to VR, Meta (formerly Oculus) has confirmed that the Quest 3 virtual reality headset is still on track to release in 2023, despite the company recently conducting layoffs and restructuring.The Quest 2 was released in October 2020 and has seen strong sales, becoming the best-selling VR headset. However, the VR industry as a whole has seen slower growth than expected, and the economic effects of the pandemic have put pressure on many tech companies. As a result, Meta conducted layoffs in some departments and restructured to focus on high-growth areas.However, it appears that VR and augmented reality remain a key focus for Meta's future. According to a statement in the Road to VR report, 'We remain committed to building the future of augmented and virtual reality—including investing in our next generation of products like Project Cambria.' Project Cambria is the codename for Meta's high-end VR/AR headset expected after Quest 3.Reaffirming the Quest 3 release in 2023 is an important sign of the company's continued commitment to VR and intention to continue pushing the technology forward.
